Description

ISMETT's activity focuses on the treatment of patients with complex diseases, which have their vital organs. The treatment of end stage organ failure has undergone radical changes with the new transplant programs, which are often the most appropriate therapeutic option for irreversible cases.

Whenever possible, minimally invasive approaches are chosen, to the benefit of the patients. Surgeries that once involved large incisions are now very often converted to less invasive procedures, in which the procedure is be performed through small holes, dramatically reducing the traumatic impact of the operation. As a result, patients recover more quickly, experience less pain, and suffer fewer complications. ISMETT surgeons have achieved an unmatched, research-based level of experience and skill in minimally invasive surgery, and will tailor the surgery based on the unique needs and condition of the patient.

Kidney transplant from a living donor:

One of the main benefits of living donor kidney transplantation is to minimize the ischemic damage associated with kidney removal surgery. In fact, when a live transplant is performed, it is a planned intervention, and the time that elapses between removing the donor's kidneys and placing them on the recipient is minimal. In the case of a kidney transplant from a living pediatric donor, it is usually one of the donor parents or an adult relative. The conditions of the candidate for donation are always studied in detail to establish good clinical conditions and the absence of contraindications to donation, without compromising renal function.

ISMETT has gained significant experience over the past 20 years and has performed over 400 kidney transplants. The first pediatric transplant was performed in 2000. In half of the cases, the kidney was taken from a living donor. The survival of children, over a period of 16 years of experience, is 94% overall, one of the best results in Europe, if we take into account the high complexity of the series (which includes combined liver-kidney transplants).

Pediatric liver transplantation from a living donor:

This is a valid therapeutic option for those children who cannot wait very long after long waiting lists. Generally, a family member, often one of the parents or, in any case, a close relative donates a small part of the liver. The benefits for the transplanted child are many, usually the postoperative procedure is simpler and involves a hospitalization of about three weeks.

In ISMETT, the survival rate of the organs and the patient at three years of surgery is 100 to 100.
