Description
The Hematology Department treats diseases related to the blood and lymphatic system, from the laboratory to the clinic, with a specialised medical and technical team. Hematology deals with diseases caused by an increase in a component of the blood. A main distinction is made between thrombocytosis (excess of blood platelets), polyglobulia (excess of red blood cells), as follows:
- cytopenias, including thrombocytopenias, anaemias and leukopenias;
- iron overload;
- coagulation disorders (haemostasis); a coagulation defect or hyperactivity can lead to several diseases or abnormalities, such as venous thrombosis or bleeding risks (bleeding diathesis), including haemophilia.
Blood cancer results from the uncontrolled growth of blood cells. A distinction is made between the following conditions:
- cancers of the blood and bone marrow, referred to as acute and chronic leukaemias;
- cancers of the lymphatic system, which include lymphomas (Hodgkin's and non-Hodgkin's), chronic lymphocytic leukaemia, multiple myeloma, and other rarer white blood cell (plasma cell) diseases. Specialised outpatient consultations take place at two sites:
- In the University Medical Clinic (PMU) building, floor 08;
- Coordinated Oncology Centre (CCO), in the main hospital building, floor 07.
General haematology treatments are under the responsibility and coordination of Prof. Lorenzo Alberio, Chief Physician. The treatment of acute and chronic leukaemia is under the responsibility and coordination of Prof. Olivier Spertini. Cancers of the lymphatic system are under the responsibility and coordination of Dr. Anne Cairoli, Associate Physician.
