Description

The Instituto Oncológico Teknon (IOT, Teknon Oncology Institute) provides comprehensive health care in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer. The IOT is organized along the lines of the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York, having a multidisciplinary medical team consisting of professionals from different oncological and surgical specialties. 

The treatments and techniques offered by specialty are:

Breast and gynaecological tumours: breast cancer, sentinel lymph node, intraoperative ultrasound

Haematology: lymphoma, chronic lymphocytic leukaemia

Tumours of the prostate, bladder, kidney and testis: cancers of the prostate, kidneys, bladder and testis

Radio-oncology service: Novalis stereotactic radiosurgery and radiotherapies

Assessment and prevention of cancer

The Medical Team includes  specialists in: Medical Oncology, Oncology-Hematology, Radiooncology, Psycho-oncology, Peritoneal Oncological;

Real-time monitoring by images of the fields of treatment with amorphous silicon detector, for the purpose of ensuring precision in the administration of the treatment (First System in Europe)

Photon linear accelerator and 3-mm multislice accelerator for stereotactic radiosurgery and radiotherapy applications

Instituto Oncológico Teknon in Barcelona is the only centre in Spain and the South of Europe that is equipped with this micro-multislice accelerator system specially intended for brain tumours, tumours in children and vascular malformations.    

The structure of Teknon Oncology Institute (IOT) allows it to provide high quality specialized health care:

- A central healthcare area, where the entire diagnostic and therapeutical activity required by each case is coordinated.

- A doctor's office area, where patients with first appointments are visited and those patients following a treatment are monitored.

- The radiotherapy department comprised of state-of-the-art technology for the Radio-oncology field.

- The Oncology Day Hospital, which contains individual units where the chemotherapy treatments are performed.

- The oncologic pharmacy, exclusively devoted to the preparation of cytostatics.

- Departments within the Centro Médico Teknon's Campus that provide oncologic services, including Diagnostic Imaging (CT scan, MRI), Nuclear Medicine and PET scan, Anatomical Pathology, Analytical Laboratory and the Emergency, Nutrition or Pain Relief Departments. Teknon Oncology Institute (IOT) includes the following units and departments:

- Breast Cancer Unit  - which offers different integrated, personalised treatments sustained by a multidisciplinary team of specialists backed up by the latest technology. These  treatments available for breast cancer can be combined where necessary (Surgery, Chemotherapy or hormone therapy, Radiotherapy),                                                      - The Prostate, Bladder, Kidney and Testicle Unit  has been created with the aim of providing the best care and the most advanced methods of prostate, kidney and bladder cancer detection and treatment. The Prostate, Bladder, Kidney and Testicle Unit consists of a multidisciplinary team including urologists, Radiation oncologists, Anatomopathologists, Oncologists, Bio-chemists, Psychiatrists and Nurses whose purpose is to provide patients with a thorough and effective service. 

Surgery (prostatectomy), intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT), hormone therapy, and in some cases chemotherapy are just some of the types of treatment performed according to patient age and condition, and the condition of the illness itself. Intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) in the treatment of prostate cancer has been performed since 2000 with the Shaped beam radiosurgery Novalis / Radiotherapy Unit of the Radiooncology Service.                                                                                            - Peritoneal Oncological Surgery Unit is dedicated to the treatment of advanced abdominal and gynecological cancers, especially those affecting the inner lining of the abdomen called peritoneum. This type of cancer metastatis is often referred to as "peritoneal carcinomatosis".

Peritoneal carcinomatosis is difficult to diagnose and treat and generally requires a combination of chemotherapy and surgery for the best chances of success.                          - The Oncology-Hematology Department is devoted to the study and treatment of any blood disease, particularly neoplastic or cancerous diseases, such as Lymphoma. The most common hematologic diseases, which can be properly diagnosed and treated in this Hematology Department are: Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease, Chronic lymphocytic leukemia, Hairy cell leukemia, Multiple myeloma, Waldenström's disease, Chronic myeloid leukemia, Polycythemia Vera, Essential thrombocythemia, Idiopathic myelofibrosis, Myelodysplasia - Refractory anemias, Bone marrow aplasia - Paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria, Acute leukemias (lymphoblastic and myeloblastic)

-The Radiation Oncology Department has two linear accelerators. One of them is a Multileaf collimator (MLC) of 5-mm intended for high-precision radiotherapy. The other one has a MLC of 3 mm intended for radiosurgical treatments.  Novalis Shaped Beam Surgery™ is suitable for different conditions. Depending on each particular case, Novalis Shaped Beam Surgery™may be the most suitable option for the following conditions: Arteriovenous malformations, Brain metastases and gliomas,  Acoustic neuromas, Cavernous angiomas, Paediatric brain tumours, Recurring brain tumours, Pituitary adenomas, Meningiomas in the base of the skull, Cancers of the Head and Neck.

Teknon Medical Centre is located in a residential area of uptown Barcelona, on Carrer Vilana, close by the Passeig de la Bonanova in a district which stands out for its tranquillity, practicality and accessibility by public and private transport. Teknon Medical Centre is at number 12, Carrer Vilana, Barcelona.

How to get to the hospital from the airport:

Barcelona's El Prat del Llobregat International airport is some 16 kilometres south of Teknon Medical Centre. With connections via the main thoroughfares entering and leaving Barcelona, the city centre can be accessed by public and/or private transport.

The Aerobus service runs every five minutes between the airport and Plaça Catalunya (journey time approximately 35 min), with stops at strategic locations along the route. The service operates the same timetable 365 days a year (from early morning until midnight).

Renfe trains. The train service between the airport and Barcelona city centre departs every 30 minutes (journey time is around 25 minutes), stopping at key stations such as El Clot, Passeig de Gracia and Barcelona Sants.

Private transport.  If you travel by private transport to Teknon Medical Centre, depending on your point of departure you could choose from the following routes:

Towards Girona. Leave the Ronda de Dalt ring road by exit 9 (Sant Gervasi). Continue straight ahead until you will find Carrer Marquesa de Vilallonga to your right side, then continue until you'll find the entrance left side, before Carrer Esperança.

Towards Lleida / Tarragona. Leave the Ronda de Dalt ring road at exit 7 (Sarrià). Continue along the slip road as far as the roundabout, where you will need to turn back on yourself. Continue straight ahead until you'll find Carrer Marquesa de Villalonga to your right side, then continue until you will find the entrance left side, before Carrer Esperança.

Teknon also has a parking lot for 1000 cars offering direct access to Hospital Admissions, Consultations, Diagnostic Service and the Emergency Room. The car park is equipped with automatic pay stations to be used prior to departure.
