The National Medical Center for Children, Shanghai

Shanghai Children's Hospital, founded in 1937 as a hospital for disadvantaged children, is the first children's hospital in China and a hospital specializing in pediatric diseases. It is a teaching hospital affiliated with the Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine.

The Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Center has become the largest diagnostic and treatment center in the country. The number of new cancer patients received each year exceeds 450 cases and totals nearly 500 cases of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation for a variety of difficult and severe hematological diseases. The 5-year survival rate after complete remission of symptoms for acute childhood lymphoblastic leukemia is over 75%, and the success rate of transplantation for aplastic anemia is 91%, which has reached the advanced level from developed countries.

The Department of Hematology and Oncology specializes in the diagnosis, treatment and basic research for children with leukemia, malignancies and haematological disorders. It mainly performs diagnosis and comprehensive treatment for patients with leukemia and solid tumors. The 5-year survival rate after complete remission reaches 75% in children with acute lymphocytic leukemia and 70% in children with malignant lymphoma. The result for other solid tumors is also leading nationwide.
